SASSA Disability Grant – Eligibility Criteria, Application Procedure & More

SASSA provides disability grants to those persons who are unable to do their work because of their mental or physical disability. Two different types of this grant are temporary disability grants and permanent disability grants. If you are disabled for more than six months but less than 12 months, you are eligible for a temporary disability grant.

If your disability whether it is physical or mental disability stays longer than 1 year then you qualify for a permanent disability grant. A permanent disability grant never means receiving this grant for your whole life. Are You Eligible for This Grant?

To receive this grant you must meet the following criteria:

  • If you are a citizen of South Africa, a refugee, or a permanent resident.
  • Your age is between 18 years to 59 years.
  • Besides, You are living in South Africa.
  • You are not admitted to a government institute for care.
  • If you have a mental or physical disability whether it is short-term or long-term.
  • You have a South African ID card.
  • You are not receiving any other welfare grant.
  • Your monthly earnings are less than R86280 when you are single.
  • If you are married, your annual salary should not be greater than R172560.
  • The worth of your asset is under R1,227,600 in case you are single.
  • The combined assets of you and your spouse are less than R2,455,200 as a married couple.
  • A state-appointed doctor confirms that you have a temporary or permanent disability.
  • A medical report older than 3 months from the date of applying for this grant is not acceptable.

How Much Will You Receive?

The amount of this grant is a maximum of R2180 monthly.

What Documents Are Required to Apply for Disability Grant?

While applying for this SASSA disability grant you must have these documents. These required documents are:

  • Your 13-digit unique ID card of South Africa. If you do not have an ID card then bring these:
  •   You have to complete an affidavit in the presence of an Oaths commissioner.
  •  A reputable person for example( principal, minister, leader, etc.) has to sign your sworn statement to verify your age and your name.
  • SASSA will collect your fingerprints. Furthermore, they will direct you to the “Department of Home Affairs” so you can apply for an ID card.
  • Please note if you do not get an ID card then your grant will be cancelled.
  • Proof of residency in South Africa.
  • Proof of income and if applicable then the proof of dividends too.
  • Your last three months’ bank statement.
  • Bring proof of your marital status. 
  • Evidence of your pension(if any).
  • A medical report confirming your disability.
  • If you were an employee in the past then bring UIF “Unemployment Insurance Fund” membership and your discharging letter from your former job. 
  • Evidence of your current address.
  • Proof of your assets and their value.
  • you have to give documentation of a refugee status and a refugee ID as a refugee.
  • If your spouse was died within the last 5 years then bring a death certificate copy and will. Further, if applicable then bring a copy of the distribution account and the first and liquidation.

Application Process

Firstly visit the SASSA nearest office and fill out the application form in front of an official. Then submit all these required documents which I explained above and the application form. The officer will take your quick interview and then tell you whether you are eligible for this grant or not. At the end, you will receive a receipt from the officials. You have to keep this receipt safe because it is evidence of your application submission.

What If You Cannot Visit SASSA Due to Your Disability?

Don’t worry, SASSA allows the applicants who cannot come to the SASSA office to send their Family or Friends for this above process.

Application Processing Time

SASSA requires 3 months for the processing of this application. This processing time can change with the number of applications for this grant during the period of your application submission and processing. If you are elected then you will get the payments from the date when you apply.

What if Your Application is Rejected?

In case of rejection, SASSA will send a letter explaining why you are not eligible. However, if you think that there is some error in judging your application then you can appeal to the “Ministry of Social Development” within 90 days.

Payments Methods

You can receive your grant payment from any of these means that is:

  • You can receive the grant from the SASSA partners.
  • Deposit of your grant in your bank account and the Postbank is another method.

You can check your application status on the Moya App and from the official website by logging in with your ID.

Reasons for the Grant Suspension

You can face suspension in your grant due to these five reasons:

  • If the selection of your application is because of a mistake.
  • Due to the change in your circumstances.
  • If you provide any false information in the application.
  • When you are not cooperative during the application review time.
  • It can be a result of the review.

Restoring your Grant

If you think that there is some error in the suspension of your grant then you can appeal to the “Ministry of Social Development” in the time duration of 90 days from the suspension of your grant.

When Will Your Grant Be Canceled?

There are some reasons why your grant can be canceled.

  • When you die.
  • When you leave the country.
  • If you did not claim for the payment of this grant 3 months straight.
  • Further, if you are in a state institute for care.
